Paris Marathon; a race that’s become essential

The Paris International Marathon holds a very special place in the capital’s sporting agenda. The modern version of this popular long-distance running event has taken place every year since 1976 and now attracts more than 40,000 participants. However, there were only 126 competitors that first year. The standard 42.195 km distance was at that time confined to the Bois de Boulogne. Three years later, the route was reconfigured to pass through all the capital's districts and finish on the square by Notre-Dame Cathedral. This big change gave the race a much-needed boost, so that by 1984 more than 10,000 participants were pounding the capital’s streets. Their number has continued to grow ever since.

A challenging way to tour the capital

The race begins on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Before reaching the Porte Dauphine finishing line, the runners will see many of the treasures of Paris. They’ll circle around the Place de la Concorde and the Place Vendôme before passing the Opéra Garnier and reaching the Hôtel de Ville. After the Place de la Bastille, the participants will go within hailing distance of the Château de Vincennes, then head in the direction of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Orsay Museum and the Eiffel Tower. A loop through the Bois de Boulogne will give them a look at the astonishing Fondation Louis Vuitton.
